Scientific Program

The overall theme of Australia 2012, Unearthing our Past and Future, reflects the crucial roles that the geosciences play in meeting the needs of societies while sustaining the Earth.

The scientific program for the 34th IGC will take place over seven days (3rd – 9th August, 2012), during which all facets of the geosciences will be covered. Each day will comprise a plenary ‘theme-of-the-day’ session, followed by up to 30 concurrent symposia comprising both offered and invited presentations.

One of the major themes will be future mineral and energy supplies, reflecting Australia’s experience in developing strong and sustainable mineral and energy sectors. Other themes will reflect major challenges for countries in the Oceania region and more broadly, including understanding and mitigating geohazards and climate change. An “information supersession”, covering a range of topics from OneGeology to geoscience data standards and interoperability, will be another feature of the program. There will also be discussion of geostandards of all types.

A list of specific symposia topics and convenors is being compiled, bearing in mind the importance of minimising or avoiding overlap. You are invited to make suggestions using the “Register your interest” tab. There will be a limit of one oral presentation (15 minutes) per delegate, although an individual may co-author several oral presentations. Poster sessions will be accorded a high profile in the progra
